Cochliobolus, Drechslera, Bipolaris, Curvularia different nomenclature for one potent fungus

Abstract: Cochliobolus is a Dematiaceous fungi that belong to family: Pleosporaceae. It is known as worldwide pathogen of mostly grasses that caused devastating disease epidemics of important economic food crops as wheat, rice, and maize. Many Cochliobolus species have their asexual states, and consequently synonyms, in either Bipolaris or Curvularia. In this review, highlights were presented on Cochliobolus species as models of fungi rich in therapeutic agents that can be employed in different applications. Moreover, d… Show more

“…20 These pathogens may have evolved biochemical mechanisms to kill the weed host. 20 Currently, several fungi have been reported to have potential as biocontrol agents for Echinochloa plants, but little research has been done to develop them into dosage forms that can be applied in the fields. [21][22][23] It is important to develop more effective biological control agents since the sluggish development of broadspectrum and effective biological control agents has largely hindered the biological control of weeds.…”

“…Many species of Cochliobolus have asexual states, which are also known as synonyms for both Bipolaris and Curvularia . Therefore, these fungi are classified within a species complex ( Elkhateeb, Kolaibe & Daba, 2021 ). The presence of Bipolaris/Curvularia in the epidermis of S. erecta was evidenced by necrotic leaf spots on the limbus.…”

“…Therefore, we aimed to identify the biosynthetic gene cluster as a first step to the mass production of KK-1 in the future through synthetic biological approaches. The genus Curvularia , as well as the genus Bipolaris , is a genus of filamentous ascomycetous fungi whose anamorph is Cochliobolus ( Manamgoda et al., 2011 ), some of which are known as plant pathogens ( Manamgoda et al., 2011 ), and several bioactive secondary metabolites have been isolated from fungi that belong to these genera ( Khiralla et al., 2019 ; Elkhateeb et al., 2021 ). However, to date, there have been no reports published on Curvularia clavata regarding its ability to produce bioactive compounds or any enzymes related to secondary metabolic pathways, and its genome information has also not been sequenced.…”
