Cocoa tea (Camellia ptilophylla) water extract inhibits adipocyte differentiation in mouse 3T3-L1 preadipocytes

Abstract: Cocoa tea (Camellia ptilophylla) is a naturally decaffeinated tea plant. Previously we found that cocoa tea demonstrated a beneficial effect against high-fat diet induced obesity, hepatic steatosis, and hyperlipidemia in mice. The present study aimed to investigate the anti-adipogenic effect of cocoa tea in vitro using preadipocytes 3T3-L1. Adipogenic differentiation was confirmed by Oil Red O stain, qPCR and Western blot. Our results demonstrated that cocoa tea significantly inhibited triglyceride accumulatio… Show more

“…Obesity has an adverse effect on health, leading to increased comorbid metabolic and chronic diseases including type-2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, coronary heart diseases, and cancer [1,2,3,4,5]. The ideal antiobesity drug should sustain weight loss through the reduction of energy intake or the increase of energy expenditure without adverse effects.…”

“…However, the effects of these test samples on lipolysis and adipogenesis as well as the mechanism underlying these effects, such as the expression of key adipogenic transcription factors including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR γ) and CCAAT/enhancer binding protein (C/EBP α) [18], need to be explored.…”

“…Herbal extracts enriched with polyphenols, alkaloids etc., possess potent anti -adipogenic and hypoglycemic activities. 32 Our study results exhibited decreased lipid content in 70% HA and alkaloidal extracts treated group, indicative of adipogenesis inhibition in 3T3L1 adipocytes, which signifies the anti -obesity effect of MK. Metabolic imbalance in T2D results in generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which decreases the antioxidant levels.…”
