Cocoon-Spinning Behavior and 20-Hydroxyecdysone Regulation of Fibroin Genes in Plutella xylostella

Abstract: The diamondback moth Plutella xylostella is a serious pest of crucifers. It has high reproductive potential and is resistant to many insecticides. Typically, the last-instar larvae of P. xylostella, before pupation, move to the lower or outer plant leaves to make a loose silk cocoon and pupate inside for adult formation. To better understand this pivotal stage we studied the cocoon-spinning behavior of P. xylostella and measured three successive phases by video-recording, namely the selection of a pupation sit… Show more

“…20E regulates silk gland function in insects. 76 Sericin is synthesized in the middle silk gland, and is a macromolecular protein complex encoded by the BmSer1, BmSer2, and BmSer3 genes. 39 In this study, the expression of BmSer1 and BmSer2 was significantly downregulated (Fig.…”

“…The addition of K + or Cu 2+ to the silk broin solutions can induce the conformational transitions of silk broin of the silkworm to β-sheet, thereby improving the mechanical performance of the silk bre (Wang et al 2017). Juvenile hormone and ecdysone can also affect silking behaviour through the modulation of Fib-L, Fib-H, P25 and other spinning-related genes at the mRNA level (Sehnal and Akai 1990;Shi et al 2020).…”
