Coding of information about tactile stimuli by neurones of the cuneate nucleus.

Abstract: Hz with a progressive decline at higher frequencies. Above 400 Hz, impulse activity occurred almost randomly throughout the vibratory stimulus cycle and therefore carried little further signal of vibratory frequency. The decline, with increasing frequency, in the ability of cuneate neurones to signal information about vibratory frequency parallels the known subjective capacities for frequency discrimination.5. A switch-over occurred at approximately 80 Hz in the population of cuneate neurones able to provide t… Show more

“…to poorer phase locking in central neurones cpmpared with primary fibres (Douglas, Ferrington & Rowe, 1978;Ferrington & Rowe, 1980a;Connor, Ferrington & Rowe, 1984), is attributable to variations in the phase of spike initiation in different P.c. fibres and to differences among P.c.…”

“…Low-threshold mechanoreceptive fibers maintain a somatotopic arrangement up to the cuneatus and gracilis nuclei (Uddenberg, 1966;Whitsel et al, 1969), where they synapse onto submodality-specific neurons segregated rostrocaudally (Kruger et al, 1961;Perl et al, 1962;Gordon and Jukes, 1964;Rosén, 1969a;Carmody and Rowe, 1974;Millar and Basbaum, 1975;Bystrzycka et al, 1977;Douglas et al, 1978;Golovchinsky, 1980;Dykes et al, 1982;Berkley et al, 1986).…”

“…Stimulation and analysis procedures were essentially similar to those described in a previous paper (Vickery et al 1992), and employed a feedback-controlled mechanical stimulator (Douglas, Ferrington & Rowe, 1978), with a flat-tipped probe (diameter between 0-25 and 2 mm), which was positioned (except in studies on the effect of skin stretch) perpendicular to, and just above the skin surface ( z 10 /tm). The tactile stimuli consisted of a step indentation of the skin up to 1 mm in amplitude, that lasted 1-5 s, and in cases where vibrotactile responsiveness was examined, a 1 s train of sinusoidal vibration was superimposed on the step and commenced 300 ms after its onset.…”
