COELOMIC TERATOMA IN A BLUE-AND-YELLOW MACAW (ARA ARARAUNA)

Abstract: A 2-mo-old, female blue-and-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna) presented with severe abdominal distension, pain, and respiratory distress. Ultrasonographic examination detected a heterogeneous mass with multiple anechoic areas, compatible with a multilocular cyst, occupying most of the coelomic cavity. Postmortem examination revealed a mass of 12.0 × 8.5 × 5.0 cm, which had an irregular surface and was connected by a pedicle to the ileum. This mass compressed and displaced the liver, proventriculus, gizzard, and inte… Show more

“…These clusters of germ cells, as long as the cells maintain their mitotic capacity, could cause the apparition of extra-gonadic teratomas. This pathology has been described as well in birds and their location seems to be similar as those described in mammals [27,28]. Teratogenesis is not yet completely understood.…”

“…Among reptiles, most cases studied have reported ovarian teratomas (Anderson et al., 1996; Christman et al., 2017; Gandar et al., 2020). Predominantly extragonadal teratomas, including those with intracranial localization, have been found in birds (de Oliveira et al., 2017; Hooper, 2008; Lopez & Murcia, 2008; Schelling, 1994). Most teratomas found in mammals are located intragonadal, but extragonadal teratomas have been reported (Meuten, 2002; Moore et al., 2003; Schelling & Morton, 2015; Sirivisoot et al., 2022).…”
