Coexistent atypical polypoid adenomyoma and complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia in the uterus

Abstract: We report a case of atypical polypoid adenomyoma (APA) concomitantly identified with complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia (CAH) in the uterus. Since an initial endometrial smear revealed atypical endometrial cells, a diagnosis of CAH was made. Even though a concomitantly performed uterine cervical smear contained both atypical epithelial and stromal cells, the diagnosis of APA was not initially made because the cytological criteria for APA had not been established. Histologically, we recognized both CAH in… Show more

“…Spindle cells in carcinosarcoma exhibit nuclear atypia. Although both APA and endometrioid adenocarcinoma may show squamous differentiation, in endometrioid adenocarcinoma, neoplastic glandular cells form back‐to‐back glands and/or cribriform glands (this finding is not observed in APA) . Moreover, the background of these two conditions is inflammatory or necrotic, in contrast to the clear background observed in APA.…”

“…In this report, we have documented the first endometrial cytological case of APA. There have been four previous cytological reports of APA in the English language literature (three from the cervix and one from the endometrium . The previously reported endometrial case was on the tumor stump of APA …”
