Coffee acutely modifies gastrointestinal hormone secretion and glucose tolerance in humans: glycemic effects of chlorogenic acid and caffeine

Abstract: Differences in plasma glucose, insulin, and gastrointestinal hormone profiles further confirm the potent biological action of caffeine and suggest that chlorogenic acid might have an antagonistic effect on glucose transport. Therefore, a novel function of some dietary phenols in humans may be to attenuate intestinal glucose absorption rates and shift the site of glucose absorption to more distal parts of the intestine.

“…Although the mechanism by which the hydroxycinnamic acids prevent oxidative stress are not yet fully elucidated, it seems to be mediated by translocation of Bad from the cytosol to the mitochondria where it dimerizes with Bcl-2 and Bcl-XL thereby neutralizing their mitochondrial stabilizing effect (Johnston, Clifford & Morgan, 2003). Chlorogenic acids may prevent oxidative stress induced mitochondrial transition pore complex opening by decreasing production of Bax and Bak protein, favoring an increase in Bcl2-BclXL/Bax-Bak ratio (Johnston et al 2003).…”

“…Chlorogenic acid also acts as a competitive inhibitor of glucose absorption in the intestine (8,35). Indeed, decaffeinated coffee seemed to delay intestinal absorption of glucose and increased glucagon-like peptide 1 concentrations in an intervention study in humans (8,36). Glucagon-like peptide 1 is well known for its beneficial effects on glucoseinduced insulin secretion and insulin action (8,37).…”

“…Di dalam kopi, terdapat senyawa polifenol yang telah dikenal sebagai senyawa antioksidan yang dapat melawan radikal bebas. Menurut beberapa hasil penelitian, mengkonsumsi kopi dapat menurunkan insiden dari berbagai macam penyakit diantaranya diabetes mellitus tipe II (Johnston, 2003), kardiovaskuler (Morton, 2007), kanker , serta menurunkan kadar asam urat (Choi, 2007).…”
