Cognitive Aspects of Students’ Mathematical Reasoning Habits: A Study on Utilizing Lesson Study and Open Approach

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the cognitive aspects of the mathematical reasoning habits of 3rd Grade students by utilizing Lesson Study (LS) and Open Approach (OA) in teaching mathematics. The cognitive aspects of mathematical reasoning habits are a powerful complement to teaching mathematics because they are particularly focused on skills and procedures. However, the major problem with teaching mathematical reasoning is that teachers cannot teach mathematical reasoning habits directly but can set up tasks … Show more

“…PLCs strive to create an environment that supports educators in optimizing teaching for diverse student needs, promoting academic success through data-driven decisions, ongoing development, and a student-centered focus [2]. By observing how a particular behavior influences and positively impacts students' learning [1][2][3], teachers gain firsthand insights into the effectiveness of student learning. This observation-based approach encourages teachers to analyze the correlation between student behaviors and the resulting outcomes in students' understanding.…”

“…Furthermore, these traditional learning techniques could result in additional adverse effects on students, such as a lack of critical thinking abilities, inadequate problem-solving strategies, and strained relationships in small groups or the entire classroom. So, we use the professional learning community (PLC) technique [2] to improve student teaching in a classroom environment and overcome the constraints of the traditional approach [3]. However, when teachers use the PLC approach for schooling, they will observe different student behaviors during the learning process.…”

“…Nevertheless, the pedagogy being espoused by teachers is considered one of the factors that lead to students' poor performance in mathematics (Ngiwas et al, 2022;Rabanal & Domondon, 2023). The main issue with mathematical reasoning instruction is that teachers can put up assignments that stimulate reasoning but cannot directly teach mathematical reasoning habits (Manmai, Inprasitha & Changsri, 2021).…”

“…Mathematics is one of the most essential subjects in life as it is a foundation for students' development, no matter which field or profession they will follow in the future; it is used everywhere [1]. The core suggestions regarding the status of mathematics, nevertheless, drop into three extended parts: mathematics is a fundamental ability for all humans in lifetime normally; a mathematically knowledgeable individual will subsidize to a nation's economic wealth, and mathematics is significant for its particular sake [2].…”
