Cognitive functionality in next generation wireless networks: standardization efforts

Abstract: This article discusses recent standardization efforts related to cognitive radio focusing on the work of IEEE Standards Coordinating Committee 41, formerly known as IEEE 1900. Some important tasks to be performed by the CR standardization community also are presented. These tasks will expedite the introduction of CR devices to the market while promoting a fair use of scarce radio resources. Some avenues for using the currently available standards for rapid deployment of CR devices, such as ISO standards, also … Show more

“…Also, the vast amount of measurement data can be used as input for DSA enabled radios to facilitate the search for the appropriate white space. There exists already quite some literature that describes how to allocate [2], [3], [4], [5], [6], [7], manage [8], [9], [10], [11], standardize [12], [13], [14], [15], and use the spectrum as secondary user [16], [17], [18], [19] (e. g. Spectrum User Rights (SUR), Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA), Dynamic Spectrum Management (DSM)) in an efficient way. Moreover, how it affects current regulation [20], [21], [22], [23], [24], [25], [26], [27] that argue the need for a monitoring network to assure compliance of (DSA) radio equipment with regulatory rules [20], [23].…”

“…The distance between CBS and some PBS is 2d = 2000 m. We select the long-term evolution (LTE) as the background PRNs. According to the proposal of IEEE 1900, LTE network will adopt the DSA technique, and all radios are equipped with cognitive functionality in the near future [35,36]. In all simulations presented in this section, the COST-231 Hata path loss model is considered [37].…”

“…By assigning the CR users different priorities, i.e., primary users (or non-cognitive users), denoted as U A , and secondary users (or cognitive users), denoted as U B , both types of user are able to coexist in a neat way and fully utilize all of the spectrum resources. As a result, CR provides a highly promising solution for future wireless systems [4].…”
