The British Miners' Strike of 1984-1985 represents one of the most pivotal periods in British industrial relations. Media stance toward the miners remains a controversial issue today, as attested by recent publications looking back at the strike (Williams 2009a, 2014). Here, authors including miners, journalists and other commentators argue that media coverage of the strike followed a consistently anti trade union agenda in which the media sought to destabilise the strike. An internal BBC report only recently made public shows that the BBC themselves had concerns over possible imbalances in their coverage of the so-called 'Battle of Orgreave' (Harcup 2014). Despite the weight attached to media coverage in this context, however, surprisingly little research has been conducted from a discourse-analytical perspective to show systematically and empirically how such an agenda may have been manifested across media texts. In this paper, drawing on Critical Cognitive Linguistics, I show how one particular metaphorical framing of the strike, which construed the strike as a war between the State and the National Union of Miners, persisted through the year long period and consider the potential ideological functions of this framing in media strategies of (de)legitimation. I show how this metaphor featured in linguistic, visual and multimodal forms of media representation.

RESUMO: este ensaio objetiva mostrar como a linguística Cognitiva tem redimensionado a discussão acerca da referência. tal objetivo se desdobra nos seguintes: (i) situar os estudos de orientação cognitivista na discussão empreendida no âmbito da filosofia tradicional e (ii) refletir sobre a forma como as teorias cognitivistas têm lidado com o fenômeno por meio do princípio da projeção entre estruturas conceptuais estáveis ou locais/online. A partir dessas reflexões, ressalta-se que o paradigma da Linguística Cognitiva não apenas contribui para o debate filosófico acerca da referência, mas também para que se avance nas pesquisas que seguem o viés interacional-discursivo. nesse ínterim, consideramos que a convergência entre abordagens linguístico-cognitivas e estudos discursivos é fundamental para que se se possa contemplar o caráter dinâmico e multifacetado do fenômeno da referência. ABSTRACT:This essay aims at showing how Cognitive Linguistics has recontextualized discussions on reference. such objective unfolds in the following ones: (i) to approach cognitivist studies concerning the issues raised in the context of traditional philosophy and (ii) to reflect on the way cognitive theories have dealt with this phenomenon by means of projection between steady or local conceptual structures. From these reflections, this essay considers that the Cognitive Linguistics paradigm not only contributes to philosophical debates about reference, but also to advances in research works identified with the interactional-discursive perspective. Therefore, it points out the convergence between cognitive-linguistic approaches and discursive studies is fundamental so that it can contemplate the dynamic and multifaceted character of the reference phenomenon.

Abstract. With far right-wing ideologies coming to prominence in both Europe and the USA, we should ask to what extent the process is stimulated by the rightwing media whose discourse is based on Strict Father morality, grounded in the ancient concept of the Great Chain of Being. The application of such morality in politics and politically-biased media leads to the emergence of language of oppression, with the Other being stigmatised just for being the Other. This is seen as a threat to sustainable development, which aims at reducing inequalities based on disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion.Keywords: right-wing discourse, the Great Chain of Being, sustainable development, mass media, Strict Father morality WIELKI ŁAŃCUCH BYTU -REAKTYWACJA. JĘZYK OPRESJI JAKO ZAGROŻENIE DLA ZRÓWNOWAŻONEGO ROZWOJU Streszczenie. Nawrót popularności ideologii skrajnie prawicowych po obu stronach Atlantyku skłania do refleksji nad tym, w jakim stopniu proces ten jest stymulowany przez dyskurs prawicowych mediów, których oceny oparte są w dużej mierze na moralności Surowego Ojca. Ideologia ta ma korzenie w starożytnej koncepcji Wielkiego Łańcucha Bytu, na którym miała opierać się wszelka hierarchizacja świata. Zastosowanie takiej moralności w polityce i politycznie nastawionym dyskursie prowadzi do powstania języka opresji, skierowanego przeciwko Innemu, i stanowi zagrożenie dla idei zrównoważonego rozwoju.
