Cognitive maps, AI agents and personalized virtual environments in Internet learning experiences

Abstract: This paper develops frameworks to help Internet media designers address end-user information presentation preferences by advancing structures for assessing metadata design variables. Design variables are then linked to user cognitive styles. An underlying theme is that AI methodologies may be used to help automate the Internet media design process and to provide personalized and customized experiences. User preferences concerning knowledge acquisition in online experiences provide the basis for discussions of … Show more

“…It is a method designed not only to elicit the knowledge that a decision maker faces, but also to combine probabilities associated with various factors in order to obtain a final probability (Browne et al 1997). Therefore, knowledge maps can play a key role in creating a more effective KMS; developing advanced knowledge maps has become an important issue in the knowledge management domain (Herl et al 1999;Maule 1997). Traditional knowledge maps usually adopt mathematical and statistical methods to generate maps on the basis of papers, textbooks, and reports (Pritchard 1969).…”

“…Narrative approaches to the enterprise or its organisational components, where the primitives are emphasised can be a route to hierarchical or more fuzzy arrays of words from the glossary matrix and thus into the required detail; language cues are the points of entry. Graphical or diagrammatic display of semantic relationships and software agents to aid the navigation of the cognitive maps represented by language pathways would be a complementary development (Maule, 1997). Chen and Davies (1999) also report on a semantic system for the contribution to and the extraction from a collection of Web documents in a shared environment.``The integration of spatial and semantic structures provides a basis for social navigation.…”
