Cognitive Resilience to Psychological Stress in Military Personnel

Abstract: Military personnel often perform complex cognitive operations under unique conditions of intense stress. This requirement to perform diverse physical and mental tasks under stress, often with high stakes, has led to recognition of the term ‘tactical athlete’ for these performers. Impaired cognitive performance as a result of this stress may have serious implications for the success of military operations and the well-being of military service men and women, particularly in combat scenarios. Therefore, understa… Show more

“…In fact, a main rationale behind the need to better understand the key basic processes that drive performance under pressure is to enable a more precise future understanding of higher-order processes and their measurement. Similarly, understanding how these cognitive processes interact with high-pressure environments to support optimal performance is a key to informing interventions for optimization of cognitive resilience ( Flood and Keegan, 2022 ). Understanding how specific cognitive processes interact with context and state factors will be critical for informing precise mechanism-targeted interventions.…”

“…Future investigations should also research cohorts of female gender FFs to confirm whether the physiological attributes in this current research study tend to influence PAT performance time scores differently than their male gender counterpart. Resilience should be considered as an alternative to MT [ 96 ]. Future research should also seek to establish independent effects by using interventions, such as exercise training programs and control groups, to isolate changes in independent physiological attributes and to control for other intervening factors that could influence PAT performance time scores.…”

“…The cognitive challenge of soldiers is no less important than their physical challenges, as soldiers from across military disciplines and special operation units are required to make decisions under conditions of fatigue, mental stress, major physical strain and sometimes under gunfire and explosions [ 56 ]. However, while some investigations have indicated possible cognitive benefits of β-alanine supplementation during highly intense military training [ 52 ] or simulated military training [ 57 ], other studies were unable to support that effect [ 53 , 58 ].…”
