Cognitive Science Progresses Toward Interactive Frameworks

Abstract: Despite its many twists and turns, the arc of cognitive science generally bends toward progress, thanks to its interdisciplinary nature. By glancing at the last few decades of experimental and computational advances, it can be argued that-far from failing to converge on a shared set of conceptual assumptions-the field is indeed making steady consensual progress toward what can broadly be referred to as interactive frameworks. This inclination is apparent in the subfields of psycholinguistics, visual perception… Show more

“…Perception can be described as the cognitive process through which individuals form their thoughts and interpretations of the objects or events they perceive. According to Spivey (2023), the concept of perception refers to the cognitive process via which humans engage in thinking. Students' perceptions can be defined as the comprehension of their preferred learning method, which includes their personality traits related to visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and reading/ writing modalities (Muluk et al, 2020;Mudra, 2023).…”

“…We kick off with the newest contribution to the (ongoing) topic aimed at introducing the Fellows of the Cognitive Science Society (outlined in Bender, 2022), so far featuring articles by Cleotilde "Coty" Gonzalez (Gonzalez, 2022), Steven Sloman (Sloman, 2022), Jenny R. Saffran (Ruba, Pollak, & Saffran, 2022), and Michael J. Spivey (Spivey, 2023). This exclusive group is now joined by Barbara Malt from Lehigh University (US), who was elected Fellow of the Cognitive Science Society in 2022.…”

“…Broad concepts in interdisciplinary fields often yield inconsistent definitions, varying in precision and meaning (e.g., "open scholarship"; see Parsons et al, 2022; see also Corley & Gioia, 2011;Estellés-Arolas & González-Ladrón-de-Guevara, 2012). Given the rise of interdisciplinary research, such as cognitive science, this paper looked into the contextual influences when developing and interpreting concept definition heterogeneity, expressed as linguistic description variances (Spivey, 2023).…”
