Cognitive style, cortical stimulation, and the conversion hypothesis

Abstract: What does it mean to have a “verbal cognitive style?” We adopt the view that a cognitive style represents a cognitive strategy, and we posit the conversion hypothesis – the notion that individuals with a proclivity for the verbal cognitive style tend to code nonverbal information into the verbal domain. Here we used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to disrupt this hypothesized verbal conversion strategy. Following our previous research implicating left supramarginal gyrus (SMG) in the verbal… Show more

“…Initial work in this area has begun to demonstrate that disruption of cognitive style-related brain activity can impact behavior. Targeted transcranial stimulation of the SMG was able to impair performance on a task requiring verbal processing where the scale of this effect was predicted by an individuals' level of verbal cognitive style (Kraemer et al, 2014). One outcome of this line of enquiry may be that, for most people in many scenarios, cognitive styles are habitual modes of processing which can be adapted or over-ridden depending on context.…”

“…Likewise, the question when and how this switch from one channel to another occurs is far from being clear. Kraemer et al (), using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and fMRI paradigm, propose the conversion hypothesis, namely, that people scoring high on the verbal cognitive style questionnaires have a tendency to code even nonverbal information into the verbal domain. Hence, according to this hypothesis, the way of representing information is not determined by the way how the information was conveyed but more by the learners' characteristics.…”
