This study introduces a novel passive approach for achieving tunable perfect absorption of microwave radiation, employing non-Hermitian physics to manipulate electromagnetic waves without conductive elements. By utilizing common dielectric slabs in irregular configurations within a rectangular waveguide, we can completely absorb electromagnetic energy, distinctively retaining it within the electromagnetic field instead of converting it into heat. This method contrasts with traditional metamaterials that rely on conductive components to absorb energy. Employing the transfer matrix method and Sequential Quadratic Programming for optimization, our research identifies specific non-uniform placements of FR4 slabs that maximize absorption within targeted microwave bands. Experimental validation, executed in a standard WR90 waveguide connected to a vector network analyzer, confirms the theoretical and finite element simulation results, underscoring the effectiveness of our passive strategy. This work advances our understanding of non-Hermitian systems in electromagnetic wave control and offers significant potential for applications in reducing electromagnetic pollution and enhancing secure communications, all while aligning with ecological preservation objectives.

The development of non‐Hermitian (NH) physics in nonconservative systems has led to various interesting wave phenomena, including the emergence of the non‐Hermitian skin effect (NHSE). NHSE is a topological effect caused by the nontrivial winding number of the energy spectrum, which results in many bulk eigenmodes localized on low‐dimensional boundaries under open boundary conditions. Although this phenomenon is striking, the flexible and dynamic tuning of NHSE has not been reviewed in optics systems. As an ideal NH platform, an optical system can introduce artificially constructed gains and losses and flexibly design optical structures to control the transmission and regulation of light. This exploration based on NH optical systems deepens the understanding of NHSE and facilitates technological breakthroughs in high‐energy directional localized optics applications. In this review, the focus is on the latest progress and applications of NHSE in NH optical systems, including the basic theory and local property modulation methods. Finally, possible future research directions for NHSE based on NH optical systems are discussed.

Coherent wave control is of key importance across a broad range of fields such as electromagnetics, photonics, and acoustics. It enables us to amplify or suppress the outgoing waves via engineering amplitudes and phases of multiple incidences. However, within a purely spatially (temporally) engineered medium, coherent wave control requires the frequency of the associated incidences to be identical (opposite). In this work, this conventional constraint is broken by generalizing coherent wave control into a spatiotemporally engineered medium is broken, i.e., the system featuring a dynamic interface. Owing to the broken translational symmetry in space and time, both the subluminal and superluminal interfaces allow interference between scattered waves regardless of their different frequencies and wavevectors. Hence, one can flexibly eliminate the backward‐ or forward‐propagating waves scattered from the dynamic interfaces by controlling the incident amplitudes and phases. The work not only presents a generalized way for reshaping arbitrary waveforms but also provides a promising paradigm to generate ultrafast pulses using low‐frequency signals. It has also implemented suppression of forward‐propagating waves in microstrip transmission lines with fast photodiode switches.
