The well path easily deviates from the original design trajectory during coiled tubing drilling, which needs to be corrected with an orienter. A three-segment correction trajectory with two arc segments and a line segment is constructed based on the differential geometry principle, and the direction at the target is consistent with the direction of the original borehole. Based on the parameters of the design correction trajectory, a mathematical relationship between trajectory parameters and the displacement vectors of orienter ribs is established by using the vector analysis method. According to the principle of minimum energy, the problem of multisolvability in mathematics is avoided. Then, the control model of the displacement vectors of orienter ribs with the parameters' variation of the designed correction trajectory is established. The similarly periodic variation rule of displacements of orienter ribs with the variation of tool face angle is obtained, and the closed-loop control scheme for correction trajectory while drilling is made. The results of field test show that by using coiled tubing drilling, during the circular arc section of the designed three-segment correction trajectory, the displacement vectors of orienter ribs vary similarly periodically, which is called the directional drilling mode. During drilling in the slanted segment, the displacements of each rib are equal, which is called the keeping drilling mode. The design method of correction trajectory and the displacement vector control method of the orienter ribs are practicable during path correction in coiled tubing drilling, which is helpful to improve the efficiency of coiled tubing drilling.

Recent trends in unconventional oil and gas developments have seen longer horizontal wells drilled to achieve greater reservoir contact while minimizing cost and surface impact. Challenges for completing longer laterals include achieving effective fracture stimulation and performing clean out of the well bore after stimulation is complete. A case study was performed in Shell Groundbirch, an unconventional gas development in British Colombia, Canada, focusing on stimulation and extended reach cleanouts. Five long lateral wells +3600m lateral length with measured depth to true vertical depth ratio of 2.5, were drilled and completed; the resulting wells are 60% longer than the standard development well. Based on operational efficiency, coiled tubing (CT) was determined to be the preferred method for performing the millouts and well cleanup. 73.0 mm CT with an aggressive taper can reach the required set-down depths with enough weight on bit available to mill-out all completion plugs. Operational plans and milling tools were developed to maximize the probability of success. This paper outlines the technical details which contribute to an important case study that can help define and push the limits of extended reach CT interventions in industry.

The paper provides an update on recent advances for, and summarizes global experiences with, dendritic acidizing methods, aka acid tunneling. The scope of the paper includes both Coiled-Tubing (CT) deployed and non-CT methods, and discusses process limitations, candidate selection criteria, job design factors, operational learnings, risks, and surveillance requirements and opportunities. The paper contains a comprehensive review of published information for three different tunneling methods and relevant information for several other tunneling methods. The literature information is supplemented by, depth, temperature, and pressure records for the three processes which are discussed in detail. Execution factors such as logistics required, length of time required, and volumes of acid and other fluids used are also compared for three methods. Previous papers have focused on only one of the methods, whereas the authors will discuss acid job optimization, process risks, and surveillance requirements for multiple acid tunneling methods in substantially greater depth than have past authors. The three methods detailed in the paper are all viable but may have different niches. Differences in the job counts for the different methods are easily explained by differences in process vintages, execution speeds, and depth limitations. Previous optimization efforts were focused on tunnel creation but not acid job effectiveness in terms of the wormholes generated adjacent to the tunnels; however, some progress is now being made in that regard. There are differences in the processes regarding pushing or pulling the jetting nozzles into the tunnels, and differences in resulting tunnel trajectories. Pre-job caliper data are more critical for one of the processes than for the others, and there are significant differences in ability to measure or control tunnel direction. The tunneling tools have different sizes, but when tool size alternatives are available, the larger tool sizes offer no clear advantages to the operator. Useful risk mitigation measures are also discussed in the paper. The paper includes a comprehensive bibliography to facilitate further examinations of the technology alternatives by other petroleum industry professionals.
