Coincidence of Thyroid Tumor and Thyroglossal Duct Remnants. Review of the Literature and Presentation of Three Cases

Abstract: We used a triple approach consisting of clinical and ultrasound examination and fine-needle aspiration biopsy for preoperative assessment. Our diagnostic and therapeutic procedures included TDR excision (Sistrunk or Schlange procedure) and total thyroidectomy. Although the therapeutic approach could be a matter of discussion, most patients agreed with our suggestion of relatively radical but non-mutilating treatment. Postoperative radiation or radioiodine ablation is considered in cases of TDR carcinoma or thy… Show more

“…13 The cause is obscure, although previous irradiation could be a possible risk factor, as indicated in some literature 2,12 Also the possibility of thyroid origin and spread from a primary site have been suggested and this obviously has important implications for the therapeutic approach in these cases. 14 The prognosis of PTC is excellent when it occurs in TDC. 2,9,13 Thyroglossal duct carcinoma may be clinically indistinguishable from a benign TDC, therefore necessitating that all TDC should be studied by FNA for accurate characterization and timely intervention.…”

“…3 Aspiration of a TDC usually reveals mucoid material, a proteinaceous background, mature squamous cells and inflammatory cells. Columnar epithelial cells may also be present.…”

“…Columnar epithelial cells may also be present. 3,4 This benign congenital cyst is common, estimated to occur in 7% of the adult population, but malignancy arising in the cyst wall is rare. 1,[3][4][5] As noted by Bardales and colleagues, approximately 150 cases of carcinoma arising in a TDC have been reported.…”
