Cold atmospheric pressure plasmas exhibit antimicrobial properties against critical bacteria and yeast species

Abstract: The study showed that CAPPs demonstrate strong bactericidal and fungicidal properties in vitro. The selective application of CAPPs for the treatment of wound infections may offer a promising supplementary tool alongside current therapies.

“…The antimicrobial action of gas plasma for planktonic and biofilm 229 microorganisms, including ESKAPE pathogens, is wellestablished. [230][231][232][233] Gas plasma is created at the point of care by a high-voltage electric arc in the chosen gas and kills organisms by the action of reactive oxygen species. 234,235 Gas plasma may stimulate healing 236 through enhanced angiogenesis 237 and local tissue perfusion.…”

“…The microbicidal effect of CAP was observed in vitro [256,257,258,259,260,261] on skin and chronic wounds, and exceeds the effectiveness of CHD, PVP-I, and PHMB. In a 3D epidermis model, CAP displayed dose- and time-dependent compatibility [256]; P. aeruginosa was inactivated without destroying the structure of the epidermis.…”

“…Unlike conventional therapy, the occurrence of microbial resistance to cold plasma is unlikely due to its multiple forms of action and diversity of active agents [ 36 , 37 , 38 ]. Reactive species produced by CAP can induce oxidative damage to the biofilm during plasma exposure and, in this case, no specific interaction is required to induce the antifungal effect [ 39 , 40 ].…”
