Microwave plasma discharge-assisted surface modification of PVA films: coatings and food packaging

In this study, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film was treated with low-cost microwave oven oxygen plasma. A number of several types of microscopies, including scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle and work of adhesion, were utilized in order to investigate the impact that the plasma had on the PVA film. After plasma treatment, it was discovered that the contact angle had decreased from 39° ± 0.4 to 20.8° ± 0.2, which suggests that the surface property had changed to a hydrophilic state due to increased hydroxyl groups (C=O, O=C–O) according to our finding from the results of XPS. The increase in surface roughness was observed. Recent research suggests that the properties of PVA can be modified by adjusting the degree of oxidation, which could lead to new improvements in applications based on PVA. This could pave the way for food packaging, air-conditioner panels, and coating applications.

In recent years, society has paid great attention to health care and environmental safety. Thus, research on advanced sensors for detecting substances that can harm health and the environment has been developed rapidly. Another popular target for detection techniques is disease-expressing materials that can be collected from body fluids. Carbon, which has outstanding electrochemical properties, can come from a variety of sources and has many morphological shapes, is nevertheless an environmentally friendly material. While carbon nanomaterial has become one of the most common targets for high-tech development, electrochemical voltammetry has proven to be an effective measurement method. Herein, the paper proposes a currently developed carbon nanomaterial along with research on a modified carbon material. Moreover, four common voltammetry methods and related works are also introduced.

This study investigates the production of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) utilizing an efficient and surfactant-free hydrothermal method for use as a photocatalytic agent in the purification of organic polluted water. The structural features, optical properties and photocatalytic performance of ZnO NPs have been investigated. XRD, SEM, HR-TEM, FTIR and UV–vis absorption spectroscopy were used as analytical and characterization techniques. The ZnO NPs prepared with hexagonal structure and interesting applied properties was obtained by adjusting the processing time at a low treatment temperature of 75 °C. The crystallite size and energy band gap are reaction time-dependent, which in turn affects the photocatalytic performance. ZnO NPs under UV irradiation show an efficiency of 93% in the photocatalytic decomposition of methyl orange (MO) dye. The value of ZnO NPs bandgap (3.38 eV) is suitable for allowing UV light absorption and rapid generation of charge carriers; creating photooxidation reactions for decomposing the organic dye.
