“…Since the 1960s, the need to monitor Serra Spanish Mackerel stocks has been recognized, in light of unregulated exploitation of the species, mainly in relation to an increase in length of gillnets used, which reach up to 15 km (Mourão et al., 2014). Moreover, the prevalent capture of immature individuals is of concern, especially because stock production has been approaching maximum sustainable yield (MSY) in recent years (Alcântara Filho, 1972; Carneiro & Salles, 2011; Fonteles Filho, 1988; Lessa et al., 2004; Lucena et al., 2004; Mota Alves & Tomé, 1968).…”

“…Over time, Serra Spanish Mackerel suffered high fishing exploitation, with a maximum sustainable exploitation rate of 0.61 (Collette et al., 2011; Lucena et al., 2004; Nóbrega & Lessa, 2009). In Northeast Brazil, average total length decreased from 50.3 cm in 1998 to 38.2 cm in 2001 (Nóbrega & Lessa, 2009), as mesh size declined to catch immature individuals (Alcântara Filho, 1972; Almeida et al., 2007; Fonteles Filho, 1988; Lucena et al., 2004). Landings decreased from 10,133 tons in 2009 to 9659 tons in 2011 (Boletim Estatístico da Pesca e Aquicultura, 2011).…”

“…Deuterodon species are known by the atrophy of their upper lip on the sides of the head leading to exposed teeth in the maxilla and premaxilla (Lucena & Lucena, 2002). These exposed teeth are used by Deuterodon species to graze the periphyton layer of streambeds and to browse leaves and submerged plant fragments (Sabino & Castro, 1990), though other items as aquatic insects can be commonly found in their diets (Vitule et al, 2008).…”

Deuterodon species are known by the atrophy of their upper lip on the sides of the head leading to exposed teeth in the maxilla and premaxilla (Lucena & Lucena, 2002).…”
