“…8). By considering that the effective MRT of the reservoir is only 9 d (according to tracer experiment), the actual MRT50FE should be of only 2.7 d. This result confirms those of Liran et al (1994) and Juanicó and Friedler (1994) that found that only the freshest small effluent fractions are related with coliform numbers.…”

“…Generally, the computation of MRT starts at the end of the irrigation period when the reservoir is almost empty. Analyses carried out on several reservoirs in Israel (Liran et al, 1994) and Italy (Barbagallo et al, 2003;Cirelli et al, submitted for publication) have indicated that the relatively small fraction of fresh effluent (PFE), and not the whole age distribution of the effluent (MRT), determines the removal percentages of organic matter, bacteriological counts and the quality of effluent released for irrigation. PFE itself is a timeless unit, and thus it cannot be used to model wastewater quality changes within reactors by using first order kinetics of the Marais (1974) approach.…”

“…Several aspects of the design, operation and performance of reservoirs as wastewater treatment units have been described in previous papers ( SHELEF, 1991, 1994;JUANICO, 1993;JUANICO and FRIEDLER, 1994;LIRAN et al, 1994;JUANICO et al, in press, a and b). The limnology of this particular kind of hypertrophic impoundment in warm areas is poorly known.…”
