Collaborative annotation-driven adaptation in web portals

Abstract: Today's Web Portals suffer from information overload. We try to overcome this drawback by making them more adaptable and adaptive to the user's contexts. Therefore, we focus on the utilization of Web 2.0 techniques, especially semantic annotations, to make use of the portal users' collective intelligence.

“…User tags can be used as a new relevant feedback for user modeling (e.g., Schwarzkopf et al 2007;Nauerz et al 2007;Wang et al 2008;Szomszor et al 2008). This is perhaps the most important result of the analysis.…”

“…The approach is under development in iCITY , where these features have to be combined with a user model represented as an RDF ontology, where the user interests are an overlay of the domain ontology and the user tags are an overlay of tagged instances of the domain. Nauerz et al (2007) also sketch ways to infer users' interests, preferences and knowledge from their annotations. They also introduce the idea of building or refining user models by using user-to-user annotations, which can be useful to model passive users.…”

“…User Adaptive Interactive Systems normally include user feedback (R3) as a support function [20]. Adaptive Hypermedia studies also use user annotation (R4) for adaptations (e.g., [21]). In Intelligent Tutoring Systems, explanations (R2) are presented using the user model to complement the learning material.…”

“…They simply suggest that this profile can be used for recommendation, making use of techniques such as collaborative filtering or case-based reasoning. Nauerz et al (2007) propose a similar approach sketching some similarity metrics aimed at modeling users and providing recommendations.…”
