Collaborative control of traffic signal and variable guiding lane for isolated intersection under connected and automated vehicle environment

Abstract: Existing signalized intersection control methods allocate intersection resources to each phase from the time dimension based on traffic conflict. Solving the traffic control issues caused by the unbalanced traffic demands at intersections is always a challenge. Recently developed connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies render it possible to collect detailed real-time traffic information from vehicles for the optimal control and management of time-space resources at signalized intersections. In this … Show more

“…According to the inspired studies above, cooperative control for CAVs is executable. Several recent studies further investigate utilizing all lanes from the intersection Ding et al, 2021;Khayatian et al, 2020;Luo et al, 2019;Sun et al, 2018;. For example, Sun et al (2018) propose an intersection operation scheme, called the maximum capacity intersection operation scheme with signal, to maximize the intersection capacity by utilizing all lanes from the road at any time.…”

“…Liang et al (2020) proposed an equitable control framework with connected vehicles by constraining the maximum delay experienced by any individual vehicle. Ding et al (2021) adopted the MILP modeling approach to investigate the merits of dynamic lane usage in a CAV environment. This study sought to improve the intersection performance from the space domain.…”

“…Active traffic management strategies play a crucial role in reducing congestion and improving safety (Cao et al., 2021; Ding et al., 2022). One effective technique for improving freeway traffic conditions is ramp metering, which limits traffic throughput in on‐ramps.…”
