Collaborative scientific production of epilepsy in Latin America from 1989 to 2018: A bibliometric analysis

Abstract: Socioeconomic and cultural factors coupled with an inability to control many endemic and emerging diseases have resulted in a growing incidence of epilepsy cases in Latin America. This study aimed to analyze and describe scientific research output trends in epilepsy research for the period 1989-2018. Publications were extracted from Scopus indexed journals. Bibliometric analysis was used to analyze scientific output including number of annual publications, documents, and publication characteristics. A mapping … Show more

“…Scientific collaboration has emerged as a crucial mechanism for promoting research and particularly for generating synergies between countries with more and less economic development. This has also been the experience in relation to other endemic as HIV infection or emerging NTDs as Chagas disease, that are difficult to control in countries with less socioeconomic development ( 12 , 32 , 33 ). In countries with lower income levels, smaller populations, and scientific systems with less capacity, including Peru but also Ecuador, Tanzania, Kenya and Thailand, the high level of international collaboration (65% to 93% of the documents on cysticercosis and neurocysticercosis) contrasts with the lower levels observed in larger countries like Mexico, Brazil, and India (< 31%).…”

“…More speci cally, Bibliometrix is a statistical package written in R, a programming language and open source software with rich statistical and visualization capabilities that enables the analysis and visualization of bibliometric data retrieved from WoSCC and Scopus 20 . Meanwhile, VOSviewer is a good tool for analysing the nuances of network data, such as co-occurrences of scienti c terms and collaborations among research institutions 21 . Last, SciMAT was developed as a powerful science mapping tool and features multiple modules that simplify analyst work ow 22 .…”
