Collaborative Transportation Systems

Abstract: Abstract-We propose a new class of applications for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs), called collaborative transportation applications that aim at solving transportation problems such as congestion and parking. Specifically, we define two applications: SmartPark and SmartRide that leverage shortrange wireless communication. We quantify the potential benefits these collaborative transportation applications can offer to an individual and to the public. To this extent, we conduct both the realistic simul… Show more

“…In [16], Agatz et al proposed an optimisation‐based dynamic ride‐sharing system that aims at minimising total system‐wide vehicle miles and users’ individual travel costs. SmartRide [17] is an autonomous and opportunistic ride‐sharing system enabled via short‐range wireless communications. DC2S [18] is a dynamic car‐sharing system that makes use of the pervasive use of smartphones and a smart server to reduce the empty seats travelling problem.…”

“…Another related approach is SmartPark [39] (see http://smartpark.epfl.ch). In this case, however, there is no centralized server and fixed sensors are used to detect if a parking space is occupied or not.…”

“…Indeed, private cars account for around 83.2% of EU's inland passengers transport, and Italy is the second EU country for motorization rate, over 600 cars per 1000 inhabitants [2]. On the contrary, public transports do not offer a door-to-door service [3], and a flexible scheduling timetable, while bikes are reluctantly used in the case of bad weather conditions. With an average car occupancy in Europe of about 1.5 passengers (according to the ridesharing service BlaBlaCar [4]), city administrations are also introducing High-Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes/areas to encourage carpooling, and to reduce the number of single-occupancy vehicles.…”
