Collaborative Well Planning and Optimization of Well Placement: A Case Study From Mangala Field Development, Rajasthan India

Abstract: This paper discusses the approach of Cairn Energy India Ltd. (CEIL) in the use of a state of the art technology that integrates all relevant data scenarios for designing and planning development wells in the Mangala field of Western Rajasthan, India. To improve the quality of the well planning process, CEIL has realized the importance of a collaborative well planning environment, which was implemented by means of its world-class 3D visualization center that enables multidisciplinary well planning workflows to t… Show more

“…Fatehgarh group has five formation layers and each well is planned to be drilled and produce from one geological target on a given sub-unit zone. 1 The top hole section was drilled with motor, kicked off from vertical, nudge for anti collision mitigation if required, and build and/or turn to final inclination. After setting the casing, continue drilling intermediate/production hole which is mainly holding tangent until until the target is hit and expected depth is reached.…”

“…hole section. 1 Planning of those horizontal wells in this field are very challenging due to high uncertainty of numerous faults in the area and closely spaced wells. Due to high uncertainty as high as 20m in TVD the provision of pilot holes were planned & considered for the horizontal well placement.…”
