Collagen-Based Fibrillar Multilayer Films Cross-Linked by a Natural Agent

Abstract: Surface functionalization plays an important role in the design of biomedical implants, especially when layer forming cells, such as endothelial or epithelial cells, are needed. In this study, we define a novel nanoscale surface coating composed of collagen/alginate polyelectrolyte multilayers and cross-linked for stability with genipin. This buildup follows an exponential growth regime versus the number of deposition cycles with a distinct nanofibrillar structure that is not damaged by the cross-linking step.… Show more

“…The pH value 7 and temperature above 40°C enhance the rate of reaction to form genipin dimer between polymers. The proposed formation structure of blue pigments (genipin dimer) from genipin is shown in previous reports (Chaubaroux et al 2012; Wang et al 2012). …”

“…Another reagent is the genipin, a natural molecule extracted from the fruits of Gardenia jasminoides (Endo and Taguchi 1973;Song et al 2009). As its toxicity seems limited, this molecule was investigated as a cross-linking agent in many biological applications (Chaubaroux et al 2012). In recent works, Silva et al (2014) and Nogueira Silva et al (2015) have characterized the casein micelles cross-linked by genipin.…”
