Collagen hydrolysate from chromed shavings for leather finish

Abstract: Chrome shavings are posing a pollution threat. An alkali-enzymatic hydrolysis method was utilized to get collagen hydrolysate (CH) as possible constituent for leather finishing formulations. The new enzyme preparation Vilzim PRO Conc was exploited for the hydrolysis. The dependence of CH properties on conditions of hydrolysis was explored. The direct addition 5% CH into finishing compositions increases tensile strength and relative elongation of films obtained from the compositions. Further increase of the col… Show more

“…The previous investigation allowed the conclusion that a much lower chromium content in hydrolysate, using the same method of hydrolysis, can be reached using chromed shavings -less than 10 mg/L [28]. Accordingly, the method is suitable for finished leather powder hydrolysis only from a protein recovery point of view but is not appropriate due to the high content of chromium com pounds in the liquid hydrolysate.…”

“…Protein from chrome shavings may be reused after chemical modification as a replacement for commercial retanning products [37]. Moreover, the collagen hydrolysate obtained from chromed shavings after alkali and enzymatic hydrolysis is suitable as a component of leather finishing coatings (as a 5% addition) [38]. In study [39], a protein-based product was developed from raw trimming waste and used in a chrome tanning process to enhance the exhaustion level of chromium.…”
