Collagen I and III and metalloproteinase gene and protein expression in prostate cancer in relation to Gleason score

Abstract: InTRODUcTIOnProstate cancer is by far the most frequently diagnosed cancer in American males and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in that population. In Brazil, prostate cancer is also the second cause of death in males, being the most frequent cancer after skin tumors. Thus, the progression of prostate cancer from histologic cancer to clinically detectable and metastasizing cancer is of utmost importance.

“…Still, we made an interesting observation that collagen III mRNA expression was significantly lower in tumor site derived cells. Decreased immunostaining for collagen III in prostate tumor when compared to benign areas has been reported . Furthermore, data in Proteinatlas/Pathology suggest very low expression levels of collagen III in prostate cancer.…”

“…Coll-I and III gene and protein expression were previously evaluated in human PC, using RT-qPCR and IHC [37]. These authors also correlated Coll-I expression with Gleason score.…”

“…In one study gene and protein expression of Col-I and Col-III were evaluated in human PC, in relation to Gleason score, using RT-qPCR and IHC [25]. No correlation was found between protein and gene expression for both collagens.…”
