Collapse analysis of regular and irregular tall steel moment frames under fire loading

Abstract: This study is carried out to evaluate the progressive collapse of steel buildings under fire event. To this end, a 15-story steel structure with moment-resisting system and composite floors is considered. The effects of various parameters such as beam section size, gravity load ratio, vertical irregularity of resisting system, and location of fire compartments on collapse modes are investigated numerically. Different temperature-time curves are defined across the composite floors according to the Eurocode 4. I… Show more

“…The behavior of any structure depends on the structural configuration which are geometry, shape, and size of the building [4]. Regular structures offer advantages such as mitigating unpredictable stress concentrations that could lead to local collapse and alterations in dynamic behavior [5]. Irregular structures are characterized based on the criteria of irregularity stipulated by prevailing regulations.…”

“…In the end of the 20 th century after Ronan Point progressive collapse and current 21 st century next to World Trade Centre terrorist attack the interest of structure robustness has increased significantly. The development of design method and design requirements in papers [1,2,3,4,5,6] and design standards were presented.…”

“…The effect of bolted single angle, shear-tab and bolted double angle connections on the fire performance of steel beam were investigated by Pakala and Kodur (2016) and Fischer and Varma (2017). Also, as has been demonstrated by the collapse of the buildings such as WTC (New York, 2001) and Plasco (Special Committee for Inspection Plasco Building Disaster, 2017), the incomplete design of beam-to-column connections might cause immature failure, which could cause a progressive collapse of the structure in fire conditions (Special Committee for Inspection Plasco Building Disaster, 2017; Heshmati and Aghakouchak, 2019; Chaboki et al ., 2021). So there is a need to assess the fire response of steel beams with welded top-seat angle joints.…”
