Collective effective dose received by the population of Egypt from building materials

Abstract: Natural radioactivity due to the presence of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in selected building materials (cement, sand, bricks, gypsum and ceramic) used in Egypt was measured using a gamma-ray spectrometer with an HPGe detector. The average activity concentrations observed in different building materials ranged from 10.0 +/- 1.3 to 109 +/- 6, <2 to 55.8 +/- 2.2 and 5.5 +/- 1.7 to 684 +/- 34 Bq kg(-1) for 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, respectively. Based on these, together with previously reported results, the effective doses … Show more

“…River sediments are one of the most important building materials in India like in other countries of the world. It is of great interest to note that mineral based building materials has the highest concentration of radionuclides (8) . River sediments are mineral deposits made up of materials derived from natural materials like rock, soil, biological and anthropogenic inputs that is broken down by the process of weathering and erosion of either igneous or metamorphic rocks which is subsequently transported by water or wind (9) .…”

“…In the building, it has been pointed out that the highest concentrations of radionuclides are found in mineralbased materials such as stone, sand, bricks, cement and sediments [8].Though these radionuclides are known to be widely distributed in the environment, their concentrations have been found and reported [9] to depend on the geological setting of a particular environment, and such they vary from place to place.…”
