Collisional detachment of electrons and ion molecule reactions in oxygen

Abstract: Collisional detachment in oxygen was studied for pressures of about 20-60 Torr and with mass analysis which also allowed conversion rates to be calculated. For O-, delta 1/N (detachment coefficient/gas density) was found to be about 5*10-18 cm2 at E/N (field strength/gas density) of about 50 Td where for O2 -, delta 2/N approximately 1*10-18 cm2. The need for an accurate measurement of the conversion rate for O- to O2 - is emphasized.

“…We report rate coefficients for several processes in N 2 -O 2 gas mixtures for the first time. In case of the detachment from O − 2 our results support the results of Neill and Craggs [8], while disagreeing with those of Frommhold [9]. We briefly review the experimental setup and fitting routine in sections 2 and 4.…”

“…The main extension is the explicit simulation of three negative ion species: O − , O − 2 and O − 3 . Similar models with slight variation have been used by various au-thors [17,10,22,23,24,8,25,26,12] for O 2 and N 2 − O 2 mixtures.…”

“…Similar kinetic schemes have been used by e.g. Zhao and Lin in N 2 − O 2 mixtures [20], and by O'Neill and Craggs in oxygen [21]. Electrons of kinetic energy above the ionization threshold can create, on impact, O + 2 (≈ 12 eV) and N + 2 (≈ 15.5 eV) ions:…”
