Colloidal Energetic Systems

Abstract: Colloidal devices—in the liquid state—possibly protected from harsh planetary environments by a soft protective deformable skin, represent a totally new paradigm in the field of robotics. They include the autonomy features of conventional robotics and the shape‐changing advantages of soft robotics and offer new opportunities to science and technology. For these systems, energy management is considered to be the most essential function to guarantee autonomy and operation. Herein, smart fluids as autonomous syst… Show more

“…The use of colloids, defined as solid nanoparticles dispersed in a carrier fluid, is our natural framework, in a study that starts from a toroidal dynamo (TORODYNA) exploiting thermomagnetic advection, 15 encompasses triboelectric colloids, 16 and finally aims at creating colloidal energy systems. 17 Here, an experimental apparatus for monitoring the shortcircuit current and open-circuit voltage production brought by the PyE colloid under different heating conditions is presented. The colloid under analysis is a dispersion of barium titanate (BaTiO 3 , BT) nanoparticles (NPs), having average diameter of 300 nm, dispersed in a ferrofluid (FF) suspension in kerosene solvent.…”

“…So, the right functionalization of TENGs is important in order to build a marketable device for recovery applications, even from unexplored energy sources such as waste heat. The present work is included in a broader research project related to CAS (colloidal autonomous system) concept [ 27 ], in which colloidal devices, properly protected from the external environment by a deformable skin, are used in order to realize a revolutionary system for the purpose of liquid-robotics. With respect to the well-established heavy, steel-based robotics, this kind of technology can be used in harsh environment applications, as space exploration, or the deepest zones of remote lakes and oceans, or post-disaster rescue searches, or even in surgery operations.…”
