Colloidal synthesis of lead oxide nanocrystals for photovoltaics

Abstract: Lead oxide nanocrystals are synthesised by injecting oxygen gas into an air and moisture free complex of Pb oleylamine and oleic acid in octadecene. Using various characterization methods including fabrication and testing of photovoltaic devices we explore the material properties and photovoltaic application of lead oxide nanocrystal films.

“…Lead oxide exists in two oxidation states, Pb 4+ (PbO 2 ) and Pb 2+ (PbO), and also with multiple mixed valence states in between (Pb 12 O 19 , Pb 12 O 17 , Pb 3 O 4 ) [1]. In both the 4 + and 2 + oxidation states lead oxide takes two crystalline polymorphs, tetragonal (ˇ-PbO 2 , -PbO) and orthorhombic (˛-PbO 2 , ˇ-PbO) [2][3][4][5].…”

“…PbO has been demonstrated as a photoactive layer in Schottkytype photovoltaic devices [12,13] and as a surface modification layer in inverted polymer solar cells [14]. ˛-PbO is a material that has potential in photovoltaic application due to its band gap of 1.9 eV [15,16] whilst ˇ-PbO has suitability as a surface modification layer for lowering work functions [14].…”

“…In order to improve the electrons mobility, NCs often proceed to the ligands exchange such as pyridine, hydrazine and ethanedithiol [54][55][56][57][58]. Moreover, hydrazine and ethanedithiol can promote the connection between the NCs and reduce the distance of the NCs, which is favorable to the electrons transport [56][57][58].…”

“…The loss of O-H and C=O group peak indicates that both of these functional groups participate in the binding of Pb(II). The appearance of a new peak after lead adsorption by adsorbent at the 614 cm -1 is the peak of the Pb-O group because the Pb-O spectra appears in the 400-700 cm -1 (Ricks & Ogden, 2003;Niasari et al, 2009;Cattley et al, 2010;and Gautam et al, 2009). Thus, the mechanism of lead binding on adsorbent could also occur by surface complexation to perform chemical adsorption (chemisorption).…”
