Colonisation of extragenital sites by Candida in women with recurrent vulvovaginal candiosis

Abstract: Extragenital sites are often colonised by Candida spp. in women with a history of recurrent vulvovaginal candidosis, but significantly more often if the genital tract is also colonised. Extragenital sites are significantly more commonly colonised with species other than C. albicans. Extragenital sites may be reservoirs for recolonisation of the genital tract in women with recurrent vulvovaginal candidosis. This has implications for treatment.

“…On the other hand, in a prospective cohort study by Patel et al [103] , panty liners and panties where clearly linked to an increased risk of candidosis. Although tight-fitting clothes, like jeans, and underwear are commonly considered to be a risk factor for Candida infection in older studies [119] , it could not be confirmed in the study of Mardh et al [120] . Of note, in sex workers, regular cleaning of the perineum and rinsing of the vagina after each client were risk factors for colonization with Candida , but not for symptomatic disease, illustrating the need to differentiate between colonization and infection [121] .…”

“…However, in some cases, the factors causing that condition are still unknown, but seems that the main problem of this pathogenesis are secondary infections caused by aerobic and facultative anaerobes microorganisms, such as Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. and Escherichia coli [48,[50][51][52].…”

“…Vaginal irritation, vulvar burning, pruritus and vaginal discharge are the main complaints associated with VVC [3] . In both sporadic VVC and recurrent vulvovaginal candidosis (RVVC), the species more frequently found are C. albicans , followed by C. glabrata , C. tropicalis and C. krusei [2][3][4][5][6][7] .…”
