Colonization of adrenal glands and ovaries of mice by HSV-2 variants

Abstract: HSV-2 strain ER was shown to consist of variants with different pathogenic phenotype: Variant ER+ replicates to high titers in the adrenal glands and the ovaries but much less in the spleen; the testes were not colonized. ER+ migrates to the spinal ganglia and is highly neuroinvasive after i.p. inoculation. Variant ER- replicates 100-1,000 fold less in the adrenal glands and the ovaries, but proceeds to the spinal ganglia without invading the CNS. However, both variants are highly neuropathogenic after direct … Show more

“…The cells of the adrenal glands are known to synthesize corticosteroids and sex steroids. Estrogens might enhance susceptibility to infection, whereas testosterone results in the suppression of HSV-1 (29). It might be assumed that, following hematogenous infection, replication in the adrenal glands and ovaries of mice is directed by hormone-dependent mechanisms.…”

“…After i.p. infection of mice, HSV-1 spreads by means of viremia to many of the visceral organs, the ovaries and the adrenal glands becoming the major replication sites (29). High levels of HSV-1 have been detected in the adrenal glands after inoculation by different routes and with different viral strains (5,17,26,30).…”

“…It should be mentioned that after i.p. infection the strains IES, Len, KOS, ER +, M1CI and the wt strains colonize adrenal glands, liver and spleen; in contrast, strain E R -does not [12].…”

“…Moreover, ER + replicates strongly in the adrenals, ovaries, liver and spleen; in contrast, Pathogenesis of HSV vaginitis 37 E R -invades and replicates in these organs only very limited [12]. Both strains, however, colonize the spinal ganglia [12]. Strain Len [3,8] served as a reference strain for HSV-1.…”

“…HSV type 1 strains Wal [32] and 17 syn + [2] and type 2 strains D 316 [10], ER [28], and HG52 [37] have been described. The characteristics of the intertypic recombinants BX1 (28-1-19), FX9(5-8), RH6, R-12-3 and R-t2-5 derived from the parental strains 17 syn + (HSV-1) and HG52 (HSV-2) have been described elsewhere [23,29,5].…”
