“…Furthermore, studies from Sub-Saharan Africa have reported a similar trend in the use of antibiotics with extensive use of ceftriaxone [ 8 , 9 , 19 , 22 , 23 ], the notion of ceftriaxone being broad-spectrum and easy to use as a single dose per day remains a reason for its increased usage. Increasing resistance to ceftriaxone in Gram-negative patients has been reported at the same health facility [ 5 , 24 , 25 ], and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Gram-negatives have been reported in up to 50% of isolates in Tanzania [ 26 28 ]. Therefore, the effectiveness of ceftriaxone as a first-choice empiric antibiotic needs to be revisited at this facility, as this antibiotic has a relatively high risk of selection for bacterial resistance.…”

“…Sampling was consecutive sampling by choosing the rst 172 patients admitted on the trauma orthopedic wards upon tting in the inclusion criteria. A questionnaire was developed after reviewing different literature on factors associated with colonization with ESBL-PE (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16). A pretested questionnaire was used to collect information on demographic characteristics, history of admission, history of antibiotic use, travel and care of animals, hygiene practices and antibiotics used in the hospital, demographics, history of antibiotic use, history of admission, travel and care of animals were measured as independent variables whereas EBLs, AmpC and Carbapemase resistance were considered as dependent variables.…”
