Color and genesis of californite from Pakistan: insights from μ-XRF mapping, optical spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Abstract: four californite samples from pakistan with yellowish-green, green and reddish-brown colors were investigated by combining the methods of μ-XRf mapping, XRD, Raman spectra, optical spectra, epMA and XpS. the results show that the californite is composed mainly of microcrystalline vesuvianite and smaller amounts of clinochlore. Based on the distribution of the clinochlore, the californite can be divided into three types. the gem-quality californite is composed of microcrystalline vesuvianite and has a transluce… Show more

“…The peaks at around 711.7 and 710.1 eV are due to the octahedral coordination of Fe 3+ and Fe 2+ , respectively. The satellite peaks of Fe 3+ and Fe 2+ occur in the range of 715.4–716.6 and 713.4–713.8 eV . The spectra of Fe (2p) indicate the distributions and relative contents of vivianite, metavivianite, and santabarbaraite.…”

“…The peaks of Fe2p centered at around 710.6 and 723.7 eV were Fe2p 3/2 and Fe2p 1/2 of Fe 3 O 4 in Ce/Fe 3 O 4 /FWB, respectively (Fig. 6(d), (e)), 68,69 indicating that Fe 3 O 4 participated in the adsorption. The percentage of Fe 2+ in fresh Ce/Fe 3 O 4 /FWB decreased from 58.9% to 53.16%, and that of Fe 3+ increased from 41.1% to 46.84% after reaction, indicating the Fe 2+ in Ce/Fe 3 O 4 / FWB was oxidized to Fe 3+ by Cr(VI) to form Cr(III) (Eqns (10) and ( 11)).…”

“…Both Fe 2p 3/2 and Fe 2p 1/2 have associated satellite peaks. 32,33 4 shows the peak areas of different binding energy positions for all samples. The ratio of the sum of the peak areas of Fe 2+ 2p 3/2 and Fe 2+ 2p 1/2 to the sum of the peak areas of Fe 3+ 2p 3/2 and Fe 3+ 2p 1/2 is used as the relative content ratio of Fe 2+ to Fe 3+ , so as to determine the change of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ content.…”
