Color Doppler ultrasonography as a routine clinical examination in male infertility

Abstract: Aim:We assessed the value of scrotal color Doppler ultrasonography as a routine examination in infertile men. Methods: Color Doppler ultrasonography was performed in 545 infertile men with a mean age of 35.8 years to detect intrascrotal abnormalities. Findings were compared with those of physical examination. Results: Intrascrotal abnormalities were detected by ultrasonography in 65.3% of patients. Of 374 abnormalities, 58.3% were undetected by physical examination. Left varicocele was found in 313 patients (5… Show more

“…It has been detected in 20-40% of the infertile men and is the main cause of male infertility [2][3][4]. Since infertility-related varicocele may be treated, radiological diagnosis is very important in the detection of this disease.…”

“…However, with the recent advances in functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques, varicocele and testicular parenchymal tissue may be evaluated as well [4][5][6]. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is a functional MRI technique, and is the measurement of the decrease and increase of microscopic water movements within the tissue A reduction of movement of water molecules in tissue is defined as the diffusion restriction [7,8].…”

“…Color Doppler ultrasonography has become a valuable method for diagnosing scrotal abnormalities in the infertile population (Sakamoto et al, 2006;Qublan et al, 2007), which increases the frequency of diagnosing TM. In infertile patients undergoing scrotal ultrasonography, the incidence of TM varies from 1.5% to 2.8% (Ganem et al, 1999;Qublan et al, 2007).…”

“…T esticular microlithiasis (TM) is a rare pathologic condition that is usually discovered incidentally during testicular ultrasound evaluation for other conditions, such as infertility (Aizenstein et al, 1998;Sakamoto et al, 2006;Qublan et al, 2007). Microliths are randomly scattered throughout the seminiferous tubules of testicular parenchyma and cause infertility in some men by seminiferous tubule obstruction (Smith et al, 1999).…”
