Color Stability and Gloss of Esthetic Restorative Materials after Chemical Challenges

Abstract: This study evaluated gloss and color changes of esthetic restorative materials subjected to different acidic beverages. Specimens of resin composites (Z350XT (Z350), IPS Empress Direct (ED), Charisma Diamond (CD)) were prepared and the initial surface gloss and color (ΔE) were measured (n=10). Then, the specimens were immersed in 4 mL of each of the different beverages (cranberry juice; Coca-Cola; coffee or artificial saliva) during 15 min, 3x/day for 14 days and new gloss and color readings were obtained. Col… Show more

“…This in vitro investigation was conducted using a 3x4x2 factorial study design to evaluate the factors "composite resin -bulk-fill, conventional nanoparticle and microhybrid", "protocols of surface treatments-no treatment, oxygen inhibition with glycerin, finishing and polishing, and glycerin + finishing and polishing" and "assessment time -immediate and mediate analysis". The main response variables included in this study were [1] degree of conversion and [2] color change.…”

“…Composite resins are materials widely used in daily practice that need adequate polymerization for good clinical performance (1). These materials are undergoing chemical degradation processes in the oral cavity due to diets that contain staining solutions, as well as acidic foods and drinks (2,3). Degradation of composite resin, including color alteration, may result in additional costs due to early replacement of restorations.…”

“…The importance of color stability in dental restorative materials due to esthetic reasons is reflected by many studies dedicated to the evaluation of color changes caused by discoloration factors, polishing and bleaching treatments etc [49][50][51][52] . Several reports regarding restorative materials claim that color alteration is perceptible when ΔE>1, clinical acceptable values are limited to ΔE<3.3 [53][54][55] .…”

“…In the oral cavity, a composite restoration is subjected to intrinsic and extrinsic staining. [18][19][20][21] Staining can be related to polymerization depth, filler particles size, photo-initiator, and the resin matrix. [22][23][24][25][26][27] Change in temperature, water sorption or adsorption, food, drinks, smoking as well as oral hygiene are some of the oral environment contributing factors.…”

[30][31][32][33][34] Resin-based composite materials represent the most commonly used restorative material in aesthetic restorations.…”
