Background: Dental shade guides are used before restorative and prosthodontic procedures for the evaluation of tooth color. The spectral coverage of the specific shaded guide and a clinician's experience in shade matching are the two most important factors for a clinically viable shade match of the restoration to the given tooth. Repeated disinfection of the shade guide with disinfectant lead to a clinically significant difference of the shade to be matched, finally resulting in a clinically unacceptable prosthesis. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of disinfection on various shade tabs of VITA 3D Master Shade guide after being subjected to 2 years of simulated disinfection with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Methodology: Two sets of VITA 3-D Master Shade Guides were used. One set of each shade guide was assessed after simulated use and surface disinfection with 70% isopropyl alcohol (test group), while the other full set was subjected to cleansing with distilled water (control group). Spectrophotometer was used to measure each of the shade tabs. Readings were recorded at regular intervals of 120, 240, 360, 480, 600, 720, 840, and 960 disinfection cycles. The ΔE values obtained were used to examine the color difference. Results: There was a significant difference in terms of ΔE between the shade tabs of control and test groups of VITA 3D Master shade guides after 960 cycles of disinfection. The change in mean ΔE was more in the test specimens in the shade tabs of VITA 3D Master Shade Guide tabs than the control specimens. These results are of statistical significance, but they might not be of any clinical significance. Conclusion: There was a statistically significant but clinically nonsignificant color change in the shade tabs of VITA 3D Master shade guides after 2 years of simulated use and disinfection with 70% isopropyl alcohol.

Objetivo: establecer los parámetros para la evaluación visual e instrumental del color dental en estudios in-vitro a partir de la literatura científica publicada entre 2015 y 2021. Métodos: se realizó la búsqueda en las bases de datos: PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, Scielo y Lilacs; también en el motor de búsqueda Google Académico y las bibliotecas de las editoriales Wiley y Springer. Las palabras clave utilizadas fueron tooth, color, in-vitro, color perception, shade matching, thresholds, appearance, surrounding, “CIELAB” y “CIEDE2000”. Teniendo en cuenta los criterios de elegibilidad, se seleccionaron los estudios de acuerdo al título, resumen y texto completo. Resultados: la búsqueda arrojó un total de 37 publicaciones que se agruparon en tres tópicos: 1. toma de color visual: condiciones ambientales, observadores y nivelación; 2. toma de color instrumental: instrumentos; y 3. procesamiento de datos: cálculo de la diferencia de color y umbrales de perceptibilidad (PT) y aceptabilidad (AT). Conclusiones: los aspectos más importantes en la evaluación visual son la iluminación, el ambiente para registro (sitio, entorno y fondo alrededor de la muestra), las condiciones geométricas de visualización, los observadores y el uso de guías. En la evaluación instrumental es relevante elegir el aparato apropiado de acuerdo con su precisión y reproducibilidad, como los espectroradiómetros y los espectrofotómetros de uso clínico. Se presenta el procesamiento de datos para establecer las variaciones de cada coordenada, las diferencias de color (ΔE): CIELAB y CIEDE2000, los umbrales y los lineamientos.

Background: Due to the close proximity to the oral cavity, shade guides are prone to contamination with saliva. Hence, disinfection of shade guides is important to prevent cross infection in clinics. This study has compared and evaluated the color change in VITA shade guide and the WALDENT shade guide after disinfecting with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Objectives: The objective of this study was to compare and evaluate the amount of color change in the VITA shade guide and WALDENT shade guide after disinfecting them with 70% isopropyl alcohol for the simulated time of 6 months and 1 year. Materials and Methods: Four commonly used shade tabs, namely A2, A3.5, B2, and C1 of two shade guides – VITA Classical Shade Guide and Waldent shade guides – were chosen for this study. VITA Easyshade spectrophotometer measured the shade, and the values were recorded in the International Commission on Illumination L*a*b* Scale. Baseline values of 8 shade tabs were obtained followed by surface disinfection using 70% isopropyl alcohol using gauze. The testing process was done to simulate a 6-month period and 1-year period. Results: Unpaired t-test was used for statistical analysis. It was found that shade tabs underwent significant changes in short period of time. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, it was found that shade guides undergo significant changes in color when disinfected with 70% isopropyl alcohol during a simulated period of 6 months. Clinical Significance: If shade guides are not periodically evaluated using a control (preferably unused) shade guide, they may have a profound impact on resulting restoration.
