Colorado Lightning Climatology

Abstract: Average cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning flash density values for Colorado are analyzed for the 21-yr period 1996–2016. An annual mean map and monthly mean maps of flash density provide insight into the thunderstorm/lightning climatology over the complex physical landscapes of Colorado. Findings include that 1) the Denver convergence/vorticity zone regional circulation influences the CG lightning distribution across the northeastern Colorado region; 2) moisture associated with the North American monsoon increase… Show more

“…Several studies have shown the widespread use and popularity of GIS applications with lightning data (Ali et al, 2018;Biswas et al, 2020;Edirisinghe & Maduranga, 2021;Farukh et al, 2017;Hodanish et al, 2019;Javor et al, 2018;Mammadov et al, 2021;Mishra et al, 2022;Misztal & Siłuch, 2021). However, due to the limitation of information provided by the commercially available LLS, utility found it difficult to work, especially on finding the root cause and correlation of tripping with some other factors such as topography and weather data, thus limiting the research on utilizing GIS for transmission lines' lightning performance evaluation.…”

“…Because this temperature level is slightly higher than the mixed phase layer (Petersen et al 2005). Proximity to water sources and wet mountains also increases thunderstorm activities (Hodanish and Wolyn 2012), because the heights cause the forced ascent of the air mass and intensify the instability of convective systems (Kilinc and Beringer 2007).…”
