Colorectal Cancer Epidemiology: Recent Trends and Impact on Outcomes

Abstract: : Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer related death in the world with an estimated number of 1.8 million new cases and about 881,000 deaths worldwide in 2018. The epide-miology of CRC varies significantly between different regions in the world as well as between different age, gender and racial groups. Multiple factors are involved in this variation including risk factor exposure, demographic variations in addi-tion to genetic susceptibility and geneti… Show more

“…Moreover, both PI3K/AKT and RAS/MAPK signaling pathways, which are key pathways for both GH and IGF signaling, were reported to be over-activated during osteosarcoma progression and metastasis (36,37). CRC is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world (38) and has a higher prevalence in acromegalic patients with respect to the general population (19). The GH/ IGF1 axis and IGF system contribute to promote colorectal tumorigenesis through different mechanisms: deregulating Wnt/b-catenin signaling (39)(40)(41), reducing the responsiveness of cells to Transforming Growth Factor Beta (TGFb) (42), enhancing the anti-apoptotic effects of both Cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) (43) and Bcl2 Like 1 (Bcl-X L) (44), and enhancing the expression of the pro-angiogenetic Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) (45,46).…”

“…Colorectal cancer is the third leading cancer worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths with an estimated 1.8 million new cases per year and 881,000 deaths worldwide (1,2). Surgical therapy remains the gold standard for rectal growths and the outcomes of surgical treatment for rectal pathologies primarily depend on the location and stage of the tumor, the perioperative surgical protocol and the surgical technique (3).…”
