Colorectal Carcinoma: Diagnostic, Prognostic, and Molecular Features

Abstract: Surgical resection is the primary treatment modality for colorectal cancer, and the pathologic assessment of the resection specimen provides data that is essential for patient management, including the estimation of postoperative outcome and the rationale for adjuvant therapy. The essential elements of the pathological assessment of colorectal cancer resection specimens include the pathologic determination of TNM stage, tumor type, histologic grade, status of resection margins, and vascular invasion. The progn… Show more

“…It is still the strongest prognostic parameter in curative cases. 1 In nodepositive colon cancer, adjuvant chemotherapy is generally recommended. In contrast, the benefit in stage II cancers is minimal, and the decision of whether to use an adjuvant therapy depends on additional risk factors.…”

“…1 In contrast to stage III cancers, the benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy is limited in stage II cases and, therefore, is offered only in defined risk situations. 2,3 Insufficient lymph node harvest is one of these risk factors.…”

“…46,47 Our results emphasized that the immune profile changes in tumor-draining LNs may represent a sensitive indicator of tumor progression. The decrease of CD169 C CD8 C T cells in tumor-draining LN indicates that the tumor may selectively modulate the context of the antitumor response to invasion and metastasis.…”
