Colorimetric detection of Cr(vi) using silver nanoparticles functionalized with PVP

Abstract: In pH 5.5 PBS buffer, PVP selectively coordinated with Cr(vi), causing PVP-AgNPs aggregation, the solution color changed from bright yellow to orange, and the characteristic absorption peak of PVP–AgNPs at 390 nm lowered, a new peak at 530 nm appeared.

“…It should be pointed out that, differently from the great majority of colorimetric methods (see, for instance, [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 16 , 29 , 30 ]), the interception of the calibration curve with the y-axis is close to zero, even for the absolute measurement at 550 nm. This is due to the fact that the absorbance of the reference solution, i.e., with a null concentration of Cr(VI), is lower than 2 × 10 −3 OD in the range between 550 and 700 nm.…”

“…Liu et al [ 12 ] obtained a LOD of 300 nM for Cr(III) and Cr(VI) through citrate-capped Au nanoparticles. By using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) functionalized silver nanoparticles, He et al achieved the very low LOD value of 34 nM for Cr(VI) [ 13 ]. However, the synthesis of metal nanoparticles and the capping procedures do not allow for the simple control of size, which reflects the reproducibility of the optical properties of the sensing medium.…”

“…20 Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a kind of nonionic watersoluble polymer based on the polymerization of Nvinylpyrrolidone (NVP). [21][22][23] Hao et al 24 used UV oxidation to prepare poly-N-(vinyl) pyrrole nanoparticles (PNVPY NPs) when polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was used as a soft template. A zinc-based anticorrosive coating was prepared by blending PNVPY with polyvinyl butyral (PVB) and it has excellent corrosion resistance owing to larger specific surface area and smaller size of PNVPY NPs.…”

“…Flame atomic absorption spectrometry was utilized for the determination of chromium(III) in water samples at trace levels (µg·L −1 ) after its preconcentration by graphene [ 19 ]. Colorimetric method was also utilized for Cr(VI) determination, based on the functionalization of silver nanoparticles by polyvinylpyrrolidone [ 20 ].…”
