Colorimetric test paper for cyanide ion determination in real-time

Abstract: A colorimetric cyanide ion (CN À ) sensor 4-[(1E)-2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)ethenyl]-1-allylpyridinium bromide (2-HPEAPB) was synthesized via condensation and N-alkylation reactions using 4-methylpyridine and salicylaldehyde as the starting materials. 2-HPEAPB displayed good selectivity, fast response, and high sensitivity toward CN À over other competing anions in acetonitrile-water (95 : 5, v/v) with a limit of detection of 8.0 Â 10 À6 mol L À1 by the naked eye. The sensing mechanism and the influence of pH and tem… Show more

“…Recently, the development of colorimetric methods along with the detection by the naked eye has been one of the subjects of interest in the analytical applications. There is an enormous interest in the colorimetric assay based on test paper as a simple, effective, fast, and low-cost sensing technology ( 5 , 33 ). The paper-based test strips fabricated according to the instruction given in Materials and Methods section were used for colorimetric experiments.…”

“…Furthermore, our paper-based SP sensor could work in purely aqueous environment. Chow, Tang, and coworkers reported effective colorimetric paper-based sensor with an ethenyl-allylpyridinum derivative, but they utilized an acetonitrile-water (95:5, v / v ) mixture [ 31 ].…”

“…Sensing of anions has grasped a lot of attraction during the last few years because of their huge importance in bio‐systems and various applications for different industrial processes [1] . Among the different anions, detection of CN − has become more important because of its enormous poisonous effects on living‐beings [2] . A trace amount of CN − is capable of strongly bind with the ferric ions in cytochrome c oxidase which hampers the intercellular electron transfer process.…”

[2] A trace amount of CN À is capable of strongly bind with the ferric ions in cytochrome c oxidase which hampers the intercellular electron transfer process. It can eventually cause death.…”
