SUMMARYThe paper proposes a method that exhibits operational simplicity for the indirect spectrophotometric determination of oxalate ion. We developed Reactive Blue 4 (RB4) as a sensor by complexation with copper ion as a simple, inexpensive yet selective colorimetric chemosensing ensemble for the recognition of oxalate over other available competitive analytes via indicator displacement assay (IDA) in both solution (aqueous medium) and solid state (paper-based experiment). The addition of oxalate to RB4-Cu2+ complex changed the colour from sky blue to dark blue due to the regeneration of RB4 by the chelation of oxalate as the competitive analyte with Cu2+. The absorbance band increase is linear with oxalate concentration from 1.76 to 49.4 µmol/L with a detection limit of 0.62 µmol/L. This measurement mode did not show any influence of interferences (available anions and ascorbic acid). This approach eliminated the need for the separation stages, enzymatic multiple-step reactions, sample preparation, organic solvent mixture, chemical modifications and equipment developed to a high degree of complexity. The oxalate determination gave results in different real samples such as urine, mushroom and spinach, which demonstrated the applicability of the existing method. Furthermore, this colorimetric system can serve as IMPLICATION molecular logic gate using Cu2+ and oxalate (C2O42–) as inputs and UV-Vis absorbance signal as the output with potential monitoring applications.

Tuning the sensing properties of spiropyrans (SPs), which are one of the photochromic molecules useful for colorimetric sensing, is important for efficient analysis, but their synthetic modification is not always simple. Herein, we introduce an alkyne-functionalized SP, the modification of which would be easily achieved via Cu-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (“click reaction”). The alkyne-SP was conjugated with a bis(triethylene glycol)-benzyl group (EG-BtSP) or a simple benzyl group (BtSP), forming a triazole linkage from the click reaction. The effects of auxiliary groups to SP were tested on metal-ion sensing and cyanide detection. We found that EG-BtSP was more Ca2+-sensitive than BtSP in acetonitrile, which were thoroughly examined by a continuous variation method (Job plot) and UV-VIS titrations, followed by non-linear regression analysis. Although both SPs showed similar, selective responses to cyanide in a water/acetonitrile co-solvent, only EG-BtSP showed a dramatic color change when fabricated on paper, highlighting the important contributions of the auxiliary groups.

Nanomolar Level Fluorogenic Detection of Cyanide with an Amide Functionalized Zirconium Metal‐Organic Framework and Its Application in Real‐World Cyanide Monitoring

This work contains synthesis of a di-amide linker based Zr(IV) metal-organic framework (MOF, 1) and its characterization with by PXRD, elemental analysis, FE-SEM, EDX and FT-IR analysis and application for the detection of toxic cyanide in aqueous medium. Furthermore, the physicochemical stability of the sensor was judged by the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and PXRD analysis. TGA curve of 1 displayed that the thermal stability of the probe was up to 230 °C. The MOF material was stable in sensing medium and in wide pH range (pH = 2-8) which were confirmed by PXRD analysis of the recovered samples. The surface area (BET) of this porous sensor was 672 m 2 /g with a pore volume of 0.36 cm 3 /g at p/p o = 0.5. Guest free form of the MOF material (1') displayed its high efficiency for the fluorescence recognition of cyanide (CN À ) with an extraordinary limit of detection of 76.4 nM in aqueous medium. Comparable recognition time (10 min) as the other available chemosensors of CN À ion and sensing of CN À using easily portable paper strips make this probe an extraordinary chemosensor for CN À ions. Together with paper strip based sensing, detection of CN À in apple seeds, various real water samples and wide ranges of pH solutions are the special features of the probe. The abstraction of amide proton by CN À ion favors "turnon" sensing, which was revealed by 1 H-NMR titration. This sensor of cyanide can also be used as luminescent switch due to its reversible nature of sensing.
