Combination of 595-nm pulsed dye laser, long-pulsed 755-nm alexandrite laser, and microdermabrasion treatment for keratosis pilaris: retrospective analysis of 26 Korean patients

Abstract: Keratosis pilaris (KP) has beenpresented as small keratotic follicular papules with or without surrounding erythema. Various treatments with laser or light therapy have been used for the management of KP with various clinical outcomes. In the present study, we investigated the efficacy and safety of a combination therapy for KP. A total of 29 anatomical sites with KP in 26 patients were treated using a 595-nm pulsed dye laser (PDL) with nonpurpuragenic fluences, a long-pulsed 755-nm alexandrite laser, and micr… Show more

“…In most cases, reassurance and general skin care focusing on avoiding skin dryness are required. Emollients, keratolytic agents, topical steroids, chemical or mechanical peels, vitamin D3 analogues, and topical or systemic retinoids may be used [ 8 ]. Various laser or light-based therapies targeting different components of the lesion have been tried with variable success rate [ 4 , 5 , 10 , 11 ].…”

“…The proposed mechanism of long-pulsed 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser was to reduce the size of the affected hair follicles. According to a study by Lee et al, the combination of 595 nm pulsed dye laser, long-pulsed 755 nm alexandrite laser, and microdermabrasion to target 3 components of KP resulted in marked improvement of KP in 51.7% of patients [ 8 ]. Therefore, the most suitable choice for the treatment of KP mainly depends on the pronounced and problematic component.…”

“…There are currently no laser therapies that can treat papules, erythema and pigmentation of keratosis pilaris at the same time. In addition, laser treatment has disadvantages of obvious pain, long recovery time, high cost, and long treatment cycles[ 4 ].…”

“…Dye lasers, due to capability to produce tunable laser lights in a wide range of wavelengths in addition to producing CW and pulsed lasers, have many applications in science [1][2][3][4][5][6], medicine [7][8][9][10][11], and industry [12][13][14]. A dye laser is generally pumped by a ash lamp or by the light of another laser.…”
