Combination of design of experiments and simple additive weighting methods: a new method for rapid multi-criteria decision making

Abstract: Multi-criteria decision making to choose the best option is a complicated task but a required activity in all fields. The problem will be more complicated if, after making a decision, one/several options are added to the list of options to be ranked. In this case, if only a certain multi-criteria decision making method is used, the decision-making shall be required to be started over again. This study recommends a simple solution to overcome this situation. The recommended solution is a combination between the… Show more

“…MCDM is a very widely used approach to solve complex problems. It refers to an integrated approach that considers a certain number of criteria in decision making, i.e., the process that combines competing criteria with quantitative and qualitative outcomes to select the best option [119][120][121][122]. According to [123] MCDM techniques have been classified in a number of ways; multi-objective decision making (MODM) and multi-attribute decision making (MADM) are the most common classifications [122][123][124][125][126][127].…”

“…These two methods are alike in its objective of optimality and this shows the chances of combining these two methods. Dua [7] has laid the foundation of combining MCDM method with statistical technique for the first time. He has merged the MCDM method of Simple Additive Weighting with Design of Experiments and based on his approach, the method of ARAS is combined with DOE.…”

“…In such cases, the PIPRECIA (PIvot Pairwise RElative Criteria Importance Assessment) method can be a viable alternative [20]. In the case where the number of lubricant types needs to be ranked either increased or decreased, combining the Design of Experiments (DOE) method with the COCOSO method can be applied to quickly rank the lubricant types without the need to redo the entire calculation process [21][22][23].…”
