Combination of Exercise Training and Resveratrol Attenuates Obese Sarcopenia in Skeletal Muscle Atrophy

Abstract: Obese sarcopenia is a progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength with increases in adipocytes. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of combination of exercise training and resveratrol on the pathological pathway from obesity to sarcopenia, and potential therapy for skeletal muscle declines in physical function. Two animal models were experimented: (1) C57BL/6J male mice were fed either a high-fat diet (HFD) for 8 weeks to induce obesity and resveratrol (low-, middle-, and high-dose) … Show more

“…It also inhibited apoptosis and improved muscle quality by activating the AMPK/Sirt1 pathway [133]. Similarly, resveratrol together with exercise training attenuated the aging-related mitochondrial dysfunction involving Bad, caspase 3, and IL-6 expression in SAMP8 mice [134]; additionally, it induced hypertrophy in the skeletal muscles of sarcopenic SAMP8 mice. Hence, combined therapy of resveratrol and exercise may attenuate obese sarcopenia.…”

“…Sarcopenic obesity refers to reduced skeletal muscle mass and muscle strength in parallel with an increase of body fat [1]. Excessive body fat causes muscle atrophy by suppressing protein synthesis in skeletal muscles [2].…”

“…At the physiological level resveratrol has been showed to induce protection against type II diabetes [23,24], cardiovascular diseases [118,119], and improve the skeletal muscle functions [25,[120][121][122]. Further data on resveratrol have been obtained by exploiting different mouse models, such as naturally aging C57BL/6 mice, diabetic mice [123], senescence-accelerated mice [124], and transgenic strains [125].…”
