“…Eight studies were at low risk of bias in the 'reference standard' domain (Cho 2012;el Sharkwy 2013;Gagné 2003;Guerriero 1996a;Guerriero 1996b; Marasinghe 2014; Paiva 2014; Yun 2014), three studies were classified as unclear risk and no studies demonstrated a high risk. An unclear risk of bias was assigned if there was not enough information to determine how likely the reference standard was to have correctly classified the target condition.…”

“…Biomarkers can be also taken into consideration in the endometriosis diagnosis but none of them have adequate reliability for clinical use. Therefore, laparoscopy remains the gold standard for definitive diagnosis of endometriosis [ 24 ]. The treatment options for endometriosis include hormonal therapies, to achieve a hypo-oestrogenic status (oral contraceptives, progestins, danazol, GnRH agonists), pain-relieving agents (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, opioids) or surgical removal of endometriotic implants [ 25 , 26 ].…”

“…For these reasons, development of sensitive and specific non-invasive tests for endometriosis is a priority for investigators [169]. Many DNA-based non-invasive diagnostics methods are used in the clinical practice in obstetrics and gynecology [170].…”
